    Winery Overview

Cantine Astroni is a family-owned winery located in the heart of Campania, Italy, nestled between the ancient volcanic landscapes of the Phlegraean Fields and the lush greenery of the Astroni Nature Reserve. Founded by the Varchetta family, whose winemaking tradition dates back to the late 19th century, the estate has become a custodian of local grape varieties and terroirs. Its vineyards, rich in volcanic soils, provide an ideal environment for cultivating native grapes such as Falanghina and Piedirosso, which form the backbone of the winery’s distinctive and authentic wines. The philosophy of Cantine Astroni blends deep respect for tradition with a forward-looking approach to sustainability and innovation. The estate emphasizes minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the cellar, aiming to preserve the natural character of each grape variety. At the same time, modern techniques are employed to enhance quality and consistency, ensuring wines that express both the heritage of the land and the skill of contemporary craftsmanship. This balance has allowed Cantine Astroni to stand out as one of the leading voices in Campania’s wine scene. Beyond wine production, Cantine Astroni is dedicated to cultural preservation and environmental stewardship. The winery actively engages in promoting the history, biodiversity, and gastronomic traditions of the Phlegraean area, offering visitors immersive experiences that connect wine with local heritage. Through tastings, tours, and educational initiatives, Cantine Astroni not only showcases its wines but also shares the story of a land shaped by fire, nature, and human passion.

    Vineyard

100% Piedirosso, also known as Per ‘e Palummo because during the maturation, the stems turn a red color which is similar to a pigeon’s leg. It is a typical Campanian or even more so, Neapolitan vine and is widespread in the volcanic areas of the province of Naples. Soils are a light tuffaceous sand of volcanic origin.

    Terroir

Campi Flegrei is a unique appellation, located entirely within the city limits of Napoli. The area is a vast system of underground volcanoes, consisting of 70 craters “caldera” in all. Cantine Astroni has 15 hectares of vines around the main “Astroni" crater, from with the winery derives its name.

Soil is typically a light, young volcanic sand, with a high element of Potassium creating more salty and lower PH wines.
Piedirosso is the main red varietal of the area.

    Vinification

Native yeast fermentation. Partial whole cluster maceration for at least a week, depending on the vintage, with gentle pumping over. Aged in stainless steel tanks for 6 months on the lees.

    Tasting Notes

A clear and consistent wine, a ruby red color with violet hues. An intense nose, fine and complex, which presents fruity notes (red fruits such as currants and plums), mineral and floral (violet) as well as flinty and smoky notes typical and unmistakable of this grape variety.
